Different Types of Metal Splashbacks

Metal splashbacks are a great option for your kitchen. Durable with contemporary design options, they are the perfect focal point of any modern kitchen. There are a few different types of metal splashbacks available, including composite panels, pressed metal and DecoSplash® solid aluminium splashbacks.

DecoSplash – the solid aluminium splashback

Solid, flat sheet aluminium offers many benefits, both from a practical and aesthetic point of view. DecoSplash is lightweight, easy to install and even easy to cut – powerpoint holes are no longer a bothersome issue. Completely non-combustible, aluminium will not ignite or overheat. In fact, it dissipates heat evenly across the surface, making it a safe option even behind cooktops even without a fibre cement backing. Thanks to the unique photo imaged powder coat finish it uses, DecoSplash offers a wide range of designs and styles, including custom designs and signature effects like chrome, matt and satin finishes, for the ultimate in creative freedom.

Aluminium composite panels

Also known as ‘sandwich panels’, these are splashbacks featuring two thin aluminium ‘skins’ and a plastic or mineral core. While mineral cores are fire retardant, plastic cores are combustible and should not be used behind cooktops. Mineral core composite panels will still require a fibre cement or gyprock backing when used behind a stove.

Pressed Metal

Pressed metal splashbacks are typically made from tin, and feature a variety of geometric shapes and patterns pressed and embossed into the metal. They are great for creating customised designs, or fitting certain aesthetics such as vintage or art deco. While pressed tin itself is not combustible, if it is painted, the wet paint finish may make it unsafe for use behind a cooktop. Pressed metal splashbacks are also known to dent easily.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is non-combustible and typically used behind cooktops as an alternative to acrylic splashbacks. While they are fire safe and durable, their reflective surface can scratch and scuff easily, and there are no options for customisation.
